For this unit of work I have been tasked with researching into the different types of ways that art is displayed and sold. I have split this section into 3 parts so that I can explain each in detail. I am hoping that by investigating art in this way I will be able to learn some tips and hints for promoting my own work.
Commercial Spaces
Commercial art spaces are areas where the selling of art is the main buisness, this would include private art galleries, craft centres. shops and magazines. The whole point of these establishments is to sell art work. In Lincoln where I live we have a range of commercial spaces, the most well known is the Sam Scorer gallery which sells art work aw well as displaying it in exhibitions. Usually the work in the gallery is put there by an artist that the gallery owners like the work of and then when it sells the gallery takes a cut of the profit. We also have some smaller commercial art spaces called the terrace. these have been set up as units for up and coming artists to rent as work spaces.
Public Spaces
Public spaces tend to be less about selling the art work and more for the joy of seeing it. The artwork in these places may be borrowed from an artist or even a collector, examples of this would be the Tate galleries in London or the Usher Gallery in Lincoln. Sometimes these places which will usually be museums or art galleries will buy art work for their own collections if they believe it is important enough. Public art spaces will usually be charitable organizations or funded by public money. The benefits for an artist being in a public space is that lots of people will see your work and you could become far more well known.
Community Spaces
Community art normally means that it is not in a gallery or museum, instead it will be put in a community area like a park or a town centre fpr everyone to see. Examples of community art like the Angel of the North or the B of the bang get alot of publicity for the artist who made them. The main lesson I can learn from community art is to think big and get people talking!
